As a fixture in rumors since the middle of last year, Dontrelle Willis hopefully learned how to block out the swirling speculation about whether the Florida Marlins will trade him. If not, he’s in for a rough winter. Yesterday, the Marlins set their payroll and the Miami Herald reported that the new figures would allow the Marlins to retain both Willis and Miquel Cabrera. However, today, the Palm Beach Post stated "Although there are no solid indications that he will be dealt, the Marlins have done little to quash speculation. Owner Jeffrey Loria has given 2007 payroll parameters to the frontoffice. But General Manager Larry Beinfest wouldn’t say whether those
figures would allow the Marlins to retain Willis and third baseman
Miguel Cabrera, both of whom are eligible for salary arbitration."
Well, that muddies things right up, thanks. Just about every team in the league would be interested in acquiring the young pitcher, however, it’s not clear how many would be able to present the Marlins with a deal they would not be able to turn down. Current rumors are that the Mets will offer the Marlins, Lastings Milledge in a package deal, however, the Mets were also rumored to be presenting the Padres with a similar package in hopes of getting Jake Peavy in return. This would appear to be yet another situation that will produce new rumors daily so check back often for the latest.
Free agent Juan Pierre recently told reporters that it would "be nice" to once again patrol center-field in Florida. Pierre makes his off season home in Florida and made a name for himself with the Marlins, helping them win the 2003 World Series. Nearly a year ago, the Marlins, needing to cut payroll, traded Pierre to the Cubs for three pitching prospects. However, the problem Florida had with Pierre a year ago, is the same problem they have today. He won’t be cheap. According to the Miami Herald, despite Pierre’s expressed desire to rejoin the Marlins, the Marlins have yet to call Pierre’s agent.
